Stem:  Smooth gray stems with dense compacted leaves

Leaves:  Smooth, membranous, elliptic-oblong alternating on firm petioles 3-5cm long. Leaf margins are serrated. 7-10 pairs of secondary veins that are broadly reticulated. 

Flower: Male and female flowers occur separately. Both are situated on fascicled racemes, greenish-blue in color, waxy and elongate.

Fruit:  Purplish capsules about 7-8 mm thick containing 3 chambers. One seed found in each chamber with a thin orange skin.

Propagation: Seeds or stem cuttings

Habitat: Limestone forest edges
